Aluminium 5086 is an aluminium-magnesium alloy that mainly consists of 3.5–4.5% magnesium, 0.2–0.7% manganese, along with small amounts of chromium, iron, silicon, copper, and zinc, with the rest being aluminium. This alloy, which can’t be heat-treated, boasts impressive corrosion resistance, particularly in marine settings. Its mechanical properties vary by temper: tensile strength falls between 275–350 MPa, yield strength ranges from 125–240 MPa, elongation is 10–20%, and Brinell hardness is 65–90 HB. Forging refines the grain structure, enhancing toughness and fatigue resistance, making Aluminium 5086 perfect for high-stress and load-bearing applications.

Aluminum 5086 is not ideal for high-temperature forging applications due to its relatively low melting point and limited strength at elevated temperatures. It is better suited for marine and structural applications.
Aluminum 5086 offers high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and weldability. It is ideal for marine environments, aerospace applications, and custom forgings requiring durability, lightweight properties, and easy fabrication.
Aluminum 5086's excellent workability enables easy forging, allowing it to maintain strength and formability. However, its susceptibility to cold working requires careful temperature control during forging to prevent cracking.
Aluminium 5086 forgings find extensive use in areas that require strength, corrosion resistance, and weldability. They are particularly common in the marine sector for constructing hulls, decks, and offshore structures due to their ability to withstand seawater corrosion. Other uses include components for transportation, pressure and cryogenic vessels, drilling equipment, and structural frameworks that need lightweight yet robust materials. Forged Aluminium 5086 parts are favored for high-stress industrial applications because the forging process enhances their mechanical properties, providing excellent fatigue resistance and dimensional stability.
